This is a little unusual project that calls for the creation of a green balcony space not primarily for food production. Food production will be a secondary objective in view of the ongoing fogging exercise in this residential neighbourhood; at least not for leafy vegetables, but perhaps root produce (e.g. ginger). There will be 2 balconies to work with, but works will only proceed for one balcony at the moment.

Primarily, the client wishes to have a staging area for plants; as a nursery to house seedlings for use at the farm. This allows for the monitoring and watering of the seedlings on a daily basis.

While food is not a priority, there will be 3 main objectives. Firstly, the focus will be on planting certain flower species to beautify and attract bees. Once the flowers wilt, their seeds will be collected for propagation at the farm. Secondly, fruit trees (e.g. papaya, apple custard) and key vegetation seedlings (leguminous plants for permaculture applications) will be nurtured to stability before being transplanted at the farm. Thirdly, the space will be used as a children’s educational site for teaching and learning (e.g. sowing, growing, insect watching, composting, vermicomposting).

It’s an ongoing experiment to watch this small space develop organically so stay tuned to find out more.
